Scratch Tickets
The disposable scratch tickets were used before being replaced by the automated Metcard ticketing system.
These were very easy to use. You purchase the fare type that you need and then before you travel you scratch off the date to validate the journey.
This type of ticketing system was introduced in 1989. The sale of these scratch tickets ceased towards the end of December 2001 and were no longer valid to be used for travel from the 1st of February 2002.
The problem with this ticketing system was that it was easy for people to fare evade.
